The goals of the UN Paris climate agreement are getting “within reach”, new analysis suggests. The Climate Action Tracker group looked at new climate promises from China and other nations, along with the carbon plans of US President-elect Joe Biden. These commitments would mean the rise in world temperatures could be held to 2.1C by the end of this century. Previous estimates indicated up to 3C of heating, with disastrous impacts. But the experts are worried the long-term optimism is not matched by short-term plans to cut CO2.

“World’s loneliest elephant” begins new life in Cambodia


Kaavan, a 36-year-old bull elephant, began his new life in Cambodia this week by making contact with another elephant – the first time in eight years since his partner died in 2012. The elephant was brought to an animal sanctuary in the country after efforts by animal rights groups and American singer Cher resulted in his relocation. It came months after Pakistan’s high court ruled the zoo in which Kaavan was living should be closed due to abysmal conditions as a result of systemic negligence. Sean Previl has more on his journey.
