Thousands of supporters of President Trump have stormed the US Capitol building, venting their anger at the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential election. They forced the evacuation and lockdown of Congress, where lawmakers were preparing to approve the election result. Shortly before the clashes President Trump had addressed his supporters near the White House telling them that he would never accept defeat. President-elect Biden called on Mr Trump to tell his people to go home and eventually that was the message delivered from the White House. Washington’s Mayor ordered a curfew as members of the US National Guard were deployed to protect the city. Pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol buildings on Wednesday, smashing windows and clashing with police as demonstrations took place in Washington, D.C. in opposition to the certification by Congress of Joe Biden’s presidential victory. Debates over the certification of electoral votes of Arizona were taking place in both the House of Representatives and Senate when both were called into recess amid security concerns. People could be seen on video storming through various hallways of the Capitol buildings, including both the House and Senate chambers, which appeared empty when people were seen inside. According to reports, a woman was also shot inside the building. It is not known what led to the shooting.

In a one-hour phone call on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021 with Georgia election officials, President Trump insisted he won the state and threatened vague legal consequences if the officials did not act.
